September is a welcome sight.
I’m just going to start typing and see what happens. I haven’t felt like writing for a couple weeks now. I’ve been really busy with booking shows in the office, rehearsing with a new band and spending time with my wife and son. August was deadly hot and dry as a bone. I just wanted to get through it.
It is now September (hallelujah!) and 88 degrees. I’m thankful for the cooler temperatures and Labor Day Weekend. Rest is a discipline that I need to learn more about.
On the family front, Eli Henry is growing fast. He’s already crawling and saying “momma” and “dada”. He’s started getting teeth too. What a miracle all of this is. My little boy makes me so proud. His smile and laughter can make my worst day sparkle with cracks of light. He is a great reminder of our blessings. Kierstin and I thank God for him every night in our prayers before bed. We feel that God chose him for us and us for him. We don’t expect parenthood (or life itself for that matter) to be easy because of this but we do believe that God is good and that ultimately He will deliver us.
I was drinking beers with Kevin Mann the other night and we were both sharing about how everything on the news these days feels so ominous and threatening. War, the “terror” threat, the cost of health insurance, the price of gasoline & energy, our dwindling constitution and bill of rights, the state of the economy, blah blah blah. There’s no shortage of things to be concerned about.
I look at my little boy and wonder what kind of world he will inherit.
I pray that my generation can create for our children a more peaceful and hopeful world. It’s not looking too promising though. Perhaps I am being pessimistic.
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by…

Over the weekend, I was reading an old issue of Harper’s that I picked up in the airport when I went to Houston in May. It has a special edition entitled Undoing Bush, which was only partly what it was about [because the rest of it slammed both sides in Congress, which I think is spot-on]. One of the essays was on national character, and how in a post-Hiroshima world, we’ve become easier to scare as a nation because of the specter of WMD. If you look at all the non-immediate response to 9/11, it was borne out of fear and anger.
Don’t know about you, but every time I make decisions out of fear and anger, I screw up.
No wonder we’ve done dumb things.

Jeremy,
I just think you are a communist; and you need to get down on your knees right now (dont worry about who’s looking) and pray and ask Jesus to come in to your heart and live as your personal savior for ever.
