29th 2007 Last Chance.A little over a year ago, I was one of a number of artists that participated in a project called The Message: Psalms. I was recently asked to write a little bit about where the song came from and here is what I wrote: “Last Chance” is based on Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase of Psalm 88 which is the darkest of all the psalms in the bible. It actually ends with these words: ” the darkness is my only friend.” I wanted to write a song based on this psalm because I really believe it presents an honest account of what it means to be a believer in a world that can wear you down with the after effects of the Fall. If we are honest with ourselves– to grow in faith in Christ means to weep more at the sin and desperation in our own hearts and in the world around us. Rarely in the Christian life is there an ongoing mountain-top experience of one joy after another. Rather it is a difficult and often challenging effort to believe the Truth above the noise and chaos of living. So often we view the Bible as a collection of stories and wise-sayings from people who have their lives perfectly together. We think the scriptures are about improving ourselves so that God will love us more. Instead what we find is exactly the opposite: Almighty God at work in the lives of folks who are a total mess. This is good news! So when we come across Psalm 88 and read the words “the darkness is my only friend” we can take comfort in the fact that God knows how we are when we are desperate. May

17th 2007 An update from The Map Room.
Recovery officially releases next Tuesday and Kierstin and I have been busying ourselves preparing for the big day. After launching the pre-order site we dove straight into planning and building out my new website with the Portland Studios guys. We’re thrilled with how it’s all coming along and everything is on schedule to go live next week. sidenote: this blog will be moved to its new home within my new website. we’ll put up a link… In addition to the website, I’ve been booking concerts and re-thinking how my live show will be. In the past, it’s either been me solo with my guitar or me and my guitar with a piano player…both allowed for an organic and casual atmosphere for the songs to unfold and for a conversation to happen with the folks in the audience….but things are changing since this new material was completed. For starters, the new songs are chock full of strings, horns and various orchestral percussion instruments which I obviously can’t lug around very affordably or easily at this point. So I’ve decided to wipe the slate clean and dream up a cool way to present these new songs in concert. And I can’t tell you yet — but it’s going be very very cool and very different from what I’ve done before in concerts. I’ll know more as the summer progresses and I’ll share here. The bulk of the release shows won’t start until early fall/late summer b/c i want to plan them out and give them the time and attention I gave the album. I want to thank all of you who have PRE-ORDERED the album. We’re still getting orders everyday and the record hasn’t even come out yet! And the feedback from people is great too. It feels wonderful for to us to hear that folks are digging the tracks and most everyone has told us that they feel this is my best work to date. And to believe in something the amount that we believe in this collection of songs — to spend your own money (and not a label’s) to see the completion of your creative vision come into fruition — it’s just really gratifying in a very healthy and redemptive way. Especially after all the garbage that went down with The Innocence Fires and just to let go of all that bitterness and cynicism and try to make something BEAUTIFUL and TRUTHFUL that moves you and hopefully moves other people. Now that is something I could spend the rest of my life doing. May

3rd 2007 Got any suggestions?it was a busy day today. i sent off all the materials for the album to be duplicated and ready to get into your hot little hands. (this is an interactive blog you know!) i’ve also been setting up some accounts at various places online in an effort of do a good bit of internet promotion when the album releases. So far I’ve been looking at Virb, LastFM, Facebook and Digg. I have to admit that I’m not the best at keeping updated with the coolest and hippest things online these days. Myspace is still sort of something i’m wrapping my head around to be honest. Anyways, here’s a question for you: Got any suggestions as to what other sites I could tap into for promoting this new album? I’d love to hear your thoughts if you have any. Just leave me a comment….don’t be shy. Thanks for your help! p.s. I’ve already signed up for my records to be available on iTunes (UK/Europe, USA, Canada, Australia & New Zealand) , Rhapsody, eMusic and Sony Connect…it should take effect in June. very cool…. |
