I woke up this morning and decided I needed a shave. I’ve been growing a little beard during the last two weeks of mixing…more out of laziness than attempting to be cool. Anyways the last four beard trimmers I’ve purchased have been el-cheapo and they always break so I decided to get a decent one that will last me…so I went to Target and bought this. I heartily recommend it.
It also hit me this morning that I am done with my album. After months of work, I’m appropriately worn down and very tired from being so far out on the edges of myself for so long. I spent a good amount of time rethinking things which takes a lot of energy that only seems to come from stirring the deeper waters.
I’m ready for a creative rest after months in the fields. Not to sound corny…but the harvest is great! I’m glad to be done and I’m really looking forward to touring these songs.
In other news, my wife is amazing. She’s held up my arms during this entire process. She’s my hero.
Speaking of Kierstin…we went out on a photo-shoot today. (another reason to shave!)
She found this cool looking house that had been torn down to the studs and brick chimney’s…so we snapped some shots there and then headed back to our house for some photos in our living room. I love our house. Kierstin makes this place what it is….her sense of color and style makes home feel like home.
Eli and I are blessed to have her.
After a concert last weekend, someone asked me what I thought about christian music and for some reason the only answer that came to mind was a Rich Mullins lyric….”Let the road wind tie our hair in knots, let the speed and the freedom untangle the lies.” I think that will be my answer from now on.
Poetry says it so much clearer than plain language. If I could say it in straight sentences, then I wouldn’t need poetry. I feel the same way about songwriting now….if I could say it then I wouldn’t have to sing it.
Last random thought for the evening:
We have a beautiful Japanese-Red Maple in our backyard that took a beating during that cold-snap we had a couple weeks ago. (4 nights in a row of 20 degree temperatures) Anyway, it lost all of its leaves which made us very sad….but today i noticed that it’s starting to leaf-out again….
Nature is so optimistic.

I ran a search for “Jerry” and this picture came up. I guess he likes his tuba.
Nice picture, Jerry.

Hi there….i wanted to post a quick update before I head out to the studio for our final day of mixing.
I flew home last night from Baltimore after having spent the weekend playing shows in Dover, Delaware and Quarryville, Pennsylvania…..it was so good to be back out on the road again and see some familiar faces as well as play a good amount of new material. Friday night I played piano and sang “Hand of God” for it’s first public hearing and it felt great. I’m looking forward to playing more piano in concert since I wrote so much of the new record on keys.
As I mentioned earlier, we’re on the last day of mixing. Jim Dineen and his golden ears have been making everything sound wonderful. Such a great feeling to have all the tracks coming into clear focus. After today I’ll live with the mixes for a few days and then we’ll meet up again on Thursday for a final round of tweaks and changes. Then it’s off to mastering…and then I can get this thing out there!
Wahooooooo.

Ain’t No Man Righteous (No Not One)
When a man he serves the Lord, it makes his life worthwhile.
It don’t matter ’bout his position, it don’t matter ’bout his lifestyle.
Talk about perfection, I ain’t never seen none
And there ain’t no man righteous, no not one.
Sometimes the devil likes to drive you from the neighborhood.
He’ll even work his ways through those whose intentions are good.
Some like to worship on the moon, others are worshipping the sun
And there ain’t no man righteous, no not one.
Look around, ya see so many social hypocrites
Like to make rules for others while they do just the opposite.
You can’t get to glory by the raising and the lowering of no flag.
Put your goodness next to God’s and it comes out like a filthy rag.
In a city of darkness there’s no need of the sun
And there ain’t no man righteous, no not one.
Done so many evil things in the name of love, it’s a crying shame
I never did see no fire that could put out a flame.
Pull your hat down, baby, pull the wool down over your eyes,
Keep a-talking, baby, ’til you run right out of alibis.
Someday you’ll account for all the deeds that you done.
Well, there ain’t no man righteous, no not one.
God got the power, man has got his vanity,
Man gotta choose before God can set him free.
Don’t you know there’s nothing new that’s under the sun?
Well, there ain’t no man righteous, no not one.
When I’m gone don’t wonder where I be.
Just say that I trusted in God and that Christ was in me.
Say He defeated the devil, He was God’s chosen Son
And that there ain’t no man righteous, no not one.

There are some pictures posted on my friend Brannon’s blog of some of the photography and stills from the video-shoot we did a couple weeks ago.
It was a fun couple days filming interviews with the guys who worked on the record. They got some great footage of the string sessions too. The Portland folks are incredible to work with and I’m thrilled they are involved.
The video should be pretty cool. It’ll post with the pre-orders and website changes on April 16th.
Progress is good!
